Congratulations to the winners of Blue Globe: Stories from Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū
During lockdown, young writers between the ages of 8 and 18 have been busy completing their entries for Blue Globe: Stories from Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. Any work in our online collection could be used as inspiration; the works entrants chose this year can be viewed here.
A number of staff volunteered to be on our judging panel: Sarah Pepperle, Anita Paris and Tara Elder took the 8-10 year olds; Lana Coles, Gwynneth Porter and Nick Priddy the 11-14s; and Sarah Pepperle and Gwynneth Porter the 15-18s. The judges really enjoyed reading each piece and were amazed and delighted at the imagination shown and the quality of the entries.

This fantastical guardian creature sits on top of the north tower of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. Some say it's a ghoul and others a vampire. Whatever it is, it looks a bit cheeky with its tongue poking out!

You are invited to take part in Blue Globe: Stories from Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. It’s a chance to feed your curiosity, feel inspired and challenge your creative side. And it’s easy. All you have to do is choose any artwork from the Gallery’s collection online and create a short piece of writing inspired by it.

Cosmo looks a lot like the Easter Bunny to me – and luckily for us Jacinda Ardern has confirmed that the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy are considered essential workers while we're in lockdown!

Blue Globe: Stories from the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetū
This term we ran a competition for students in school years 3-13 in which they selected a work from the Christchurch Art Gallery collection available to be viewed online and developed a piece of writing in response to that work.
We had a fantastic response with almost 300 entries responding to a vast range of works.
Local writers James Norcliffe, Jane Buxton and Gavin Bishop judged the entries and were impressed by the high quality of work that students had submitted and they way that students used the works as a springboard for their writing rather than sticking with a descriptive piece.
