Hellzapoppin'! The Art of Flying Nun
Ronnie van Hout / Peter Vangioni, Kath Webster, Russell Brown and Roger Shepherd
Soft cover with limited edition dustjacket
Want a limited-edition fluorescent piece of New Zealand music history in the form of a hand-screenprinted Ronnie van Hout approved art object that can live on your bookshelf or your wall and will make your friends jealous and has a sweet book inside it and is totally unique and numbered and will totes be worth a fortune one day but you’d never sell it cos it totally reminds you of that one time you saw the band at the Gladstone and nearly stole a poster but didn’t…
Published to mark the fortieth anniversary of the founding of Flying Nun Records in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Hellzapoppin’! brings together original artwork and design, film, record covers, posters and photography from some of New Zealand’s favourite bands. From rare collectible records and vintage posters to original artworks and paste-up designs, this book explores the art and artists behind the music.
But wait, it gets better. We’re really excited to be working with Ronnie van Hout to produce 200 super special copies of the book with hand-screenprinted dustjackets based on an absolute classic – Ronnie’s Flying Saucer cover for the Pin Group’s classic Go To Town EP.
Printed in fluro inks on 135gsm Colorplan paper, there will be multiple colourways available. And like the classic Flying Nun record covers we’re riffing off, no two will be identical. With four colours of paper, and five colours of ink, there are too many possilbities to choose from, so you'll get what you get. But rest assured, whatever colour it is it'll be awesome!
The printing is being done here in Christchurch by local artists Tjalling de Vries and Scott Jackson, and every copy will be numbered and stamped ‘Ronnie Approved’. There will only be 200 of these produced, and we’re expecting them to sell out fast. Get in now and make sure you don’t miss out.
The book will go on sale in August 2020, and your order will be mailed to you at that time. The standard version of the book will retail at $39.99.
About the book:
Entertaining essays from Peter Vangioni, Kath Webster, Russell Brown and Flying Nun founder Roger Shepherd will be interspersed with brief interview-style contributions from the people responsible for creating the art of the label. Heavily illustrated, it will feature original artwork for the records and posters, photography from the archives, and rarely seen vinyl releases and posters.
The Flying Nun aesthetic was foundational to a generation of impressionable young creators and agitators. By talking to the people responsible, this book will burst a few enduring myths, and maybe start some new ones.
