William Menzies Gibb was one of a number of Christchurch plein-air artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who enjoyed travelling out on country sketching trips with fellow artists.They would set up camp, and paint in their chosen location for several days. Although Gibb was predominantly a studio painter he also produced watercolour sketches outdoors and was a member of Christchurch’s Palette Club, which was formed in the city in 1889 and encouraged artists to paint plein-air.
