Trevor Moffitt was a keen fisherman and often incorporated his love of the sport into his paintings and prints. Moffitt produced a number of linocuts based on fishing subjects during the late 1960s and 1970s, which he printed himself. Bait is part of the 6 artists: 6 prints suite produced by printmaker Denise Copland at the El Knoko workshop in 1988. The humble bait fish, shown skewered with a hook, is treated on a monumental scale by Moffitt. Simplicity is a feature of Moffit’s art, and the direct nature of mark-making with relief block prints such as linocuts and woodcuts in many ways reflects his uncomplicated approach to conveying messages in his paintings.

Moffitt attended the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts during the 1950s, graduating with honours in painting in 1959. He forged a successful career as a painter, often producing work in series focussing on the unique stories and legends of New Zealand history as well as humanist concerns of modern life.
