Last Ride in a Hot Air Balloon is the comprehensive 2010 Auckland Triennial catalogue.
The 136-page full-colour book, Last Ride in a Hot Air Balloon, is superbly illustrated and features an impressive range of new writing by local and international authors. It includes major essays by curator Natasha Conland, Doryun Chong and Leonhard Emmerling, along with 28 newly commissioned essays on the artists, accompanied by brief biographies and the full list of works.
Organised by the Auckland Art Gallery, Last Ride in a Hot Air Balloon looks at the impulse towards adventure and risk in art today. Its title alludes to adventure's often romantic forms, yet the balloon's bird's eye view is connected to earth's surface in a manner that a jet aircraft cannot.
Triennial Curator Natasha Conland says, "Adventure and risk have been central to modern geographic and economic expansion and exploration at large. Today in a world of social and financial constraints, adventure and risk are in an era of transformation, it's timely to look at their potential in a sustainable world."
