Gallery Apartments demolition

Gallery Apartments demolition

In October 2011, demolition began on the Gallery Apartments buildings. These were situated immediately behind Christchurch Art Gallery, whose permanent collection was partially stored in part of the building closest to the demolition. These artworks had to be relocated to minimise the risk of damage, and so temporary storage spaces were made in parts of the gallery furthest from the apartments. Gallery staff had to move also, and only returned to their offices in May 2012. This time-lapse recording, captured from the WEA office on Gloucester Street, documents the "soft-strip" demolition.
