Schools
Christchurch Art Gallery is the home of the city’s public art collection and one of the most important collections in New Zealand. Let us help you discover new ways to explore the Gallery’s collection, find inspiration and learn about art.
One of the Gallery's primary goals is to encourage a sense of ownership of this collection within the community. A vital element in achieving this is the active and varied programme of learning experiences that we offer to schools.
Schools Lesson Programme
With the closure of the Gallery until mid-2013, we will continue running an outreach programme to schools relating to works in our collection.

Education programme
Learning in the Gallery
A one-hour programme led by one of our educators in which students engage with selected works of art through group discussion or hands-on activities in the Gallery.
These programmes offer students first-hand experience with real works of art whilst developing their creative and critical thinking skills. We make links to the English, social science and visual arts curriculum as well as providing students with great opportunities to develop key competencies in a social context.
The Gallery has a dynamic and frequently changing exhibition programme and lessons can be built around major exhibitions or designed to suit specific curriculum needs.
One-hour Gallery only programmes are free.
UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO OFFER GALLERY-BASED LESSONS AT PRESENT.
Gallery and Workshop
A two-hour educator-led programme in which students extend a Gallery lesson into a practical workshop in the education centre.
These programmes offer students first-hand experience with real works of art whilst building creative and critical thinking skills in addition to developing practical knowledge of art-making materials and techniques. We make links to the English, social science and visual arts curriculum as well as providing a great opportunity to develop key competencies in a social context.
