And to a certain extent it has with the shelves having been wrapped in plastic sheets by Tim, the librarian, to protect books from any damage that may inadvertently occur while the appartment blocks next door are demolished. The library can be both a place of refuge, a retreat of sorts if you needed some quiet time to meet a deadline, but it can also become a very social space where you more often than not catch up with fellow art historians and students researching.

I managed a five minute visit to the library yesterday which was profoundly depressing. The whole place smelled like a sealed tomb and more books had fallen during December's earthquakes. Seeing as they'd landed safely and can't fall any further, there didn't seem much point picking them up.
